Frequently asked questions
Q: Do I need to do anything differently to post a credit memo that uses Credit Only or Credit + Write Off Stock? No. Post it exactly as you always have (Ship and Invoice, Invoice, and so on). The extension does its work automatically as part of standard posting; there's no extra step, button, or dialog for posting itself.
Q: Can I change a line's Inventory Handling after it has already been posted? No. The field on the posted document is read-only (see Viewing the option after posting); it's a historical record of what happened at posting time, not something you edit afterwards. If a credit memo was posted with the wrong option, correct it the same way you'd correct any other posting mistake in Business Central: a correcting credit memo, a manual inventory adjustment, or your organisation's standard process for posting errors.
Q: I set Credit Only on some lines and left others on Return to Stock, on the same credit memo. Is that allowed? Yes. Inventory Handling is set per line, not per document. A single credit memo can freely mix all three options across its lines; see One credit memo, mixed situations and the worked example in A mixed credit memo.
Q: Does this affect the customer's balance or the G/L differently depending on which option I pick? No. The customer ledger and G/L postings are identical for all three options; only the inventory/item ledger side changes, or for Return to Stock, doesn't change at all from standard behaviour.
Q: What happens if I use Credit Only or Credit + Write Off Stock on an item that doesn't use item tracking (no serial or lot numbers)? Nothing different; the mechanism works the same way regardless of whether the item is tracked. If the item does use item tracking and the line has a specific tracked receipt applied, review the application-clearing behaviour in Guard rails and validation rules carefully, since clearing that link means the credit is no longer tied to that specific tracked receipt.
Q: Can I turn off all three options and force every credit memo back to standard behaviour? You can turn off Credit Only and Credit + Write Off Stock individually in Sales & Receivables Setup (see First-time setup), which leaves Return to Stock as the only choice anyone can pick. There's no single "disable this extension" switch; disabling both options achieves the same practical effect.
Q: Does the Default Inventory Handling setting change existing credit memos when I change it? No. It only affects what the Set Inventory Handling bulk action pre-selects the next time someone uses it (see Setting Inventory Handling). It never changes a value already set on any line, open or posted.
Q: How do I tell how much stock we've written off versus credited for other reasons, over a period?
See Reporting. Filter Item Ledger Entries by Entry Type; Credit + Write Off Stock posts as Negative Adjmt., everything else (including Credit Only) posts as Sale.
Q: Will the posted credit memo show an extra line for the offset? No. The Posted Sales Credit Memo lists only the lines you entered. The offset that keeps inventory net-zero is applied in the item ledger, via the internal wash line described in Key concepts and glossary and How posting works, which never becomes a visible document line, before or after posting. This matches the previous TRIMIT solution.
