Overview

What this extension does

Elevate Credit Memo adds an Inventory Handling option to Sales Credit Memo lines. By default, Business Central treats every credit memo as a physical return: posting one puts the credited quantity back into stock automatically. That's correct when goods genuinely come back, but it's wrong for every other reason a business issues a credit:

  • A price correction or goodwill gesture where no goods move at all.
  • A duplicate or incorrect invoice being reversed.
  • Damaged or faulty goods the customer keeps, or destroys, where the business still needs to credit the customer but must not put the item back into sellable stock.

Before this extension, handling any of those cases meant posting the credit memo as a normal return and then manually correcting inventory afterwards with a separate adjustment. Elevate Credit Memo removes that manual step. You pick the right handling up front, on the credit memo itself, and posting takes care of the rest.

The three options, in one sentence each

OptionOne-line summary
Return to StockStandard Business Central behaviour. The goods physically come back. Inventory increases. This is the default and requires no change in habits.
Credit Only - No Stock ChangeThe customer and G/L are credited. No goods move. On-hand inventory is unaffected.
Credit + Write Off StockThe customer and G/L are credited, for goods that are not coming back. On-hand inventory is unaffected, the same as Credit Only - see Known limitations for why.

What does not change

  • The customer ledger and G/L postings for a credit memo work exactly as they always have, for all three options. This extension only touches the item/inventory side of posting.
  • Sales Orders, Sales Invoices, Sales Return Orders, and Sales Quotes are completely unaffected. The Inventory Handling field does not appear on any of those document types.
  • If you never touch the new field, every credit memo behaves exactly as it did before this extension was installed. Return to Stock is the default on every new line.

Credit Memo versus Sales Return Order

Some businesses process a physical customer return through a Sales Return Order (which can create its own receipt and a separate credit memo afterwards), and use a plain Sales Credit Memo only for financial-only adjustments. Others post everything as a direct Sales Credit Memo, including genuine returns. Elevate Credit Memo works only on Sales Credit Memo lines; it does not touch Sales Return Order at all. If your company's process already routes physical returns through a Return Order, the Inventory Handling field on a Credit Memo line will most often be set to Credit Only or Credit + Write Off Stock rather than Return to Stock, since the physical receipt is being handled elsewhere. Neither approach is wrong; pick whichever matches how your company already works, and use Getting Started below to decide the right option once you know which document you're posting.
